Digital Self-advocacy for Persons with Disabilities

Dr. Jackline Lidubwi (Internews Network) identifies digital self-advocacy strategies for persons with disabilities. She explains how mainstream media hardly features stories of People with Disabilities, and when they are featured, the stories are not framed in inclusive ways. Social media has the potential to be a game changer for the portrayal of People with Disabilities. However, access to social media remains a challenge to many Africans with disabilities. In addition, People with Disabilities have not taken full advantage of social media for self advocacy.

Bio

Dr. Jackline Lidubwi is a multi-award-winning disability media activist, media trainer, and a journalist. She lead the Inclusive Media Project across Sub-Saharan Africa at Internews. She has more than 20 years of progressive experience in disability reporting in the media. Prior to joining Internews, she worked as a Head of Television at Y254 television, and a Senior television producer at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation in Kenya, where she advocated for the rights of People with Disabilities by designing and implementing the first-ever disability program, Abled Differently. She has research interests in disability, media training, and feminism(s). She is also an American Disability Act (ADA) fellow and a Global Change Leader at Coady International Institute in Canada. She completed her PhD in Mass Communication at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, an MA in Communication Studies from the University of Nairobi, a BA in Communication Studies from St Paul’s University, and a Diploma in Mass Communication from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. She also serves as a board member at the Riziki Source Centre, a social enterprise that connects persons with disabilities with employers in Kenya.
